In 1938, Helen Winnemore began showing the work of fellow Quakers in her Columbus, Ohio home--she called this practice "The Afternoon Shop".  Helen invited friends and acquaintances for afternoon tea and cookies, and invited them to peruse the artist’s wares which were stored in everyday cabinets and chest of drawers.

Helen Winnemore customers are still met with an offer of tea and an invitation to "go through all the drawers" in search of their own treasures.  Eventually a storefront was established at Broad Street and Parsons Avenue, until "the shop" found its’ permanent home in Historic German Village at the corner of Mohawk and Kossuth Streets, where it has run since 1966.

The shop has seven rooms filled with fine craft made of clay, wood, metal, glass, fiber, as well as 40 drawers of jewelry.  Helen maintained a presence at the shop until her death in 1996 at the age of 95.  The shop continued to run and was owned for a short time by Helen’s longtime shop manager, Jack Barrow.  In 1997, the shop was purchased by Sarah Kellenberger Harpham, who had been a customer of the store since she was a child, brought to the store by her mother.  Sarah remembers the excitement of being given a "Helen Winnemore’s" box on a special occasion.  Sarah continuously fills the shop with new work, hoping to help her customers find their own treasures in the work of these unique, American artists.
